Stolen Innocence

“Childhood should be carefree, playing in the sun; not living a nightmare in the darkness of the soul.”

Dave Pelzer, A Child Called “It”

The thought of child abuse and the horror stories I hear on the news hurt my complete being. No one likes to think about a child being abused so many go without acknowledging the truth.

Out of sight, out of mind… People think; the abuse is going to come from a stranger, abuse isn’t going to happen to their kids, or friends or family a member. Many fail to realize how the abuser can be a family member or a loved one. Plus, no one wants to make accusations or assumptions. Hearing about abuse, just makes me feel how real it is. These cases are happening…child abuse is still happening around us and currently happening all around the U.S. I’ve had my own horror story and it went on for many years unnoticed.

The amount of abuse taking place is horrifying. According to the American Society for the Positive Care of Children (AmericanSPCC), there are about 7.2 million reports of child abuse. Out of these reports 75.3% of these children are being neglected. About 60,000 are sexually abused and more than 90% of these children know their sexual abuser.

Currently the highest rate of child abuse is under the age of 1 years old! For every 1,000 about 24 are under the age of 1 years old. Almost 75% of child abuse fatalities are under 3 years old. We are losing about 5 children a day to abuse.

The saddest part is that these numbers are known to be under-reported along with the fact that these statistics have been increasing in the U.S. This is the opposite of what needs to be taking place.

As heartbreaking as it is to hear, abuse is taking place all around the U.S. and continuing to increase. This needs more attention and awareness on the subject. We all need to stand up for the abused. Please keep looking out and keeping these children in your prayers.
